ULEZ stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone, which is an area in London, England, where an emissions standard-based charge is applied to non-compliant road vehicles. The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, except Christmas Day (25 December) . The zone covers all 32 London boroughs and most of Greater London, with minor deviations to allow diversionary routes and facilities to turn around without entering the zone. The ULEZ specifically targets older cars, motorcycles, and vans with high emissions, and the basis for determining this is a set of regulations called ‘Euro standards’ . If a vehicle doesnt meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isnt exempt, the driver needs to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the zone. Lorries, vans, or specialist heavy vehicles (all over 3.5 tonnes) and buses, minibuses, and coaches (all over 5 tonnes) do not need to pay the ULEZ charge, but they will need to pay the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charge if they do not meet the LEZ emissions standard. The ULEZ has expanded across all London boroughs, bringing an additional five million people into the zone. The money raised from the ULEZ is invested in the transport network and other measures to reduce air pollution in London.
