Uremia is a medical condition that occurs when waste products, such as urea, accumulate in the blood due to the kidneys inability to filter them out through urine. Uremia is often a sign of severe kidney dysfunction, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) that may lead to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) . Uremia can also occur quickly, leading to acute kidney injury and failure (AKI) that is potentially reversible. Some of the symptoms of uremia include fluid accumulation, electrolyte, hormone, and metabolic problems, disorientation, drowsiness, extreme fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Uremia can cause serious health complications, and if left untreated, it is usually fatal.
