A veteran is a person who has served in the active military, naval, or air service, and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. The term "active service" is defined as full-time duty in the Armed Forces, other than active duty for training, and can be for any length of time but must be more than just for training. A Reservist or member of the National Guard called to Federal active duty or disabled from a disease or injury incurred or aggravated in line of duty or while in training status also qualifies as a veteran. The term "veteran" can also be used more broadly to refer to a person who has significant experience and expertise in an occupation or field.
