Vishing, or voice phishing, is a type of cyber attack that uses voice and telephony technologies to trick targeted individuals into revealing sensitive information. It is a form of phishing that relies on voice communication, typically calls to a users cell phone number. The goal of a vishing attack is to convince the target to provide information that the attacker can use for financial gain, such as stealing credit card information or stealing an individuals identity. Vishing attacks are carried out against both individuals and businesses.
Vishers use fraudulent phone numbers, voice-altering software, text messages, and social engineering to trick users into divulging sensitive information. They use savvy social engineering tactics to convince victims to act, giving up private information and access to bank accounts. Often, the caller will pretend to be calling from the government, tax department, police, or the victims bank.
To prevent vishing attacks, it is important to be cautious when receiving unsolicited phone calls or messages. Do not provide personal information over the phone unless you are certain of the callers identity. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and report it to the appropriate authorities.
