WDS stands for Wireless Distribution System, which is a method of interconnecting access points (AP) in a wireless local area network (LAN) without requiring them to be connected by a wired backbone. WDS allows a wireless network to be expanded using multiple access points, and it preserves the MAC addresses of client frames across links between access points. An access point can be either a main, relay, or remote base station, and WDS access points can connect in two different modes: wireless bridging or wireless repeating. While WDS can be useful for extending wireless LANs or connecting wired LANs where a cable isnt practical, it can be difficult to configure and may be incompatible between different products.
