A windbreaker jacket, also known as a windcheater, is a lightweight jacket designed to resist wind chill and light rain, making it a lighter version of a jacket. It is usually made of synthetic materials and is of lightweight construction. Windbreakers often use elastic waistbands and/or armbands, and a zipper to allow adjustments for the current weather conditions. They may also include a hood that may be removable and/or stowable, and large pockets on the inside or outside to protect belongings from weather such as light wind or rain. Windbreakers may offer light to moderate insulating protection, more so than a sweater, but less than an overcoat. They are primarily worn during the warmer seasons when wind or rain are expected, or as part of a layering strategy during colder seasons. Windbreakers are not waterproof, so they are not suitable for heavy rain. They are perfect for dry, breezy days when windproofing is necessary. Windbreakers are lighter and pack smaller than rain jackets, making them perfect for lightweight hiking.
