X-Mode is a software program engineered by Subaru to provide advanced, SUV-like control and increase traction and control under the most vicious road conditions. It is available on select Subaru models and can be activated with the push of a button. X-Mode controls the engine output, transmission, AWD torque split, and braking system to help tackle the trickiest of conditions. When X-Mode is on, the transmission is kept in a lower gear so that engine power can be delivered stronger, and AWD control is improved by raising the front/rear coupling force, which helps the driver drive power more evenly between the four wheels. X-Mode also incorporates Hill Descent Control, which helps maintain vehicle starting speed for safer maneuvering at low speeds. Dual-function X-MODE is available on select Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback models, which allows the driver to select between two different settings tailored to specific driving conditions, namely, snow/dirt and deep snow/mud.
