The Yo-Yo test is a fitness assessment used in cricket to measure a players maximal aerobic endurance. It has gained popularity in recent years, with some teams using it as a selection standard. The test was first introduced to the Indian cricket team during Virat Kohli's fitness-focused captaincy reign. Developed by Danish football physiologist Jens Bangsbo, the Yo-Yo test is a variation of the Beep test, a running aerobic fitness test that involves running between two sets of cones that are 20 meters apart.
During the Yo-Yo test, players run between markers placed 20 meters apart at increasing speeds until exhaustion. The test is considered challenging and has set a benchmark for selection in the Indian cricket team. However, it is worth noting that the Yo-Yo test is not a comprehensive indicator of a player's overall cricketing abilities, as the sport requires various skill sets such as hand-eye coordination, footwork, body balance, upper and lower body strength, and reflexes.
