A "seahawk" is most commonly another name for an osprey (Pandion haliaetus), a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey that is found widely across the globe except Antarctica. The osprey is often called sea hawk, fish hawk, or river hawk because of its fish-based diet and its habit of living near water. It is a large raptor with specialized adaptations for catching fish, such as reversible outer toes and barbed pads on its feet to grip slippery prey. The term "seahawk" has also been loosely used to refer to skuas, another group of fish-eating seabirds, but primarily it is synonymous with the osprey. The Seattle Seahawks football team’s "seahawk" mascot is actually an augur hawk, an African species, not a true seahawk, but the team's name reflects the osprey's nickname and characteristics.
