Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. These teachers were large, black, and ugly machines with big screens on which lessons were shown, and questions were asked. The students had to submit their homework and test papers through a slot in the machine, writing answers in a punch code that the mechanical teacher would automatically assess and grade. The lessons and the school were conducted at home, without human teachers or classmates physically present.
