In Ethiopia, the official language is Amharic. However, there are more than 80 distinct languages spoken in the country, reflecting its multicultural and multi-ethnic makeup. The Oromo language, spoken by the Oromo people who are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, is also widely spoken and holds significant cultural and linguistic importance as a national language. Oromo is an Afroasiatic language of the Cushitic branch, mainly spoken in the Oromia region and by over 40 million people, making it one of the most widely spoken languages in East Africa.
