Nigeria is a multilingual country with English as the official language at the federal level. In addition to English, many Nigerians speak a variety of local languages, with Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo (Igbo also historically called Ibo) being the most widely spoken regional languages. Pidgin English is also widely used as a lingua franca across the country. For most formal settings—government, education, media, and official documents—English is the primary language, while daily communication often happens in local languages or in Nigerian Pidgin depending on the region and context.
