Language Spoken in Brazil
The official and national language of Brazil is Portuguese, which is widely spoken by the majority of the population. It is the most populous Portuguese-speaking country in the world, with its lands comprising the majority of Portugal’s former colonial holdings in the Americas. Despite this, there are also several other languages spoken in the country, including indigenous languages and those brought by immigrants. According to the president of IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), there are an estimated 210 languages spoken in Brazil, with 154 being Amerindian languages. However, Portuguese is the primary language used in most schools, media, business, and administrative purposes. While English and Spanish are also taught in many Brazilian schools, the farther away from the larger cities, the less likely it is to encounter people who speak English.
