Cats purr for various reasons, including contentment and pleasure, but also when they are injured, in pain, or after a stressful event. Dr. Elizabeth Von Muggenthaler has suggested that the purr, with its low frequency vibrations, is a “natural healing mechanism” that may be linked to the strengthening and repairing of bones, relief of pain, and wound healing. Purring is a unique vocal feature in domestic cats, but other species in the Felidae family also purr, such as the bobcat, cheetah, Eurasian lynx, puma, and wild cat. The act of purring releases endorphins within the cat’s brain, which cause feelings of happiness, motivation, and social connection. Each cats purr is unique, with some high pitched and others emitting a low rumble.
