"What, me worry?" is a famous motto associated with the character Alfred E. Neuman, who is the mascot of the satirical magazine Mad. The characters face first appeared in the late 19th century in advertisements for painless dentistry, and Mads editor Harvey Kurtzman claimed the character in 1954. The character was named "Alfred E. Neuman" by Mads second editor, Al Feldstein, in 1956. Since his debut in Mad, Neumans likeness has appeared on the cover of all but a handful of the magazines over 550 issues. The phrase "What, me worry?" was written underneath Neumans face on the cover of Mads magazine format starting with issue #24. The phrase was initially rendered "What? Me worry?". In late 1959, Mad released a 45 rpm single entitled "What – Me Worry?" by "Alfred E. Neuman and His Furshlugginer Five". The characters face is routinely portrayed in the guise of another character or inanimate object for Mads cover images. The phrase "What, me worry?" has become a cultural catchphrase and is often used to convey a sense of nonchalance or indifference.
