Magnetic metals are attracted to a magnet and may even become magnetized. The three elemental metals that are naturally ferromagnetic are iron, cobalt, and nickel. Compounds and alloys can also be magnetic if they contain iron, cobalt, or nickel. Common magnetic alloys include many types of steel, many types of stainless steel, ferrite, and alnico. Here is a list of some of the most magnetic metals:
- Iron
- Nickel
- Cobalt
- Gadolinium
- Dysprosium
- Terbium
- Some types of steel (e.g., ferritic stainless steel)
Some materials like stainless steel dont exhibit magnetic properties unless they have a certain chemical composition. Most other metals are considered non-magnetic, such as aluminum, copper, brass, gold, silver, titanium, tungsten, and lead.
