Madame Loisel is motivated by her desire to appear wealthy and to be accepted by high society. She is unhappy with her middle-class life and feels that she was born into the wrong social class. She is jealous of her wealthy friend Madame Forestier and cannot visit her without being overcome with jealousy. The idea of going to a party without expensive clothes drives her to tears.
