The bent-over row is a compound exercise that works multiple muscle groups simultaneously, primarily hitting the back muscles. The main muscles worked during the bent-over row include:
- Latissimus dorsi: the large wing-like muscles in your back.
- Trapezius: the muscles that run from the base of your skull to the middle of your back.
- Rhomboids: the muscles that connect your shoulder blades to your spine.
- Posterior deltoids: the muscles at the back of your shoulders.
In addition to these primary muscles, the bent-over row also requires significant strength and stability from other muscles of the posterior chain, including the hip extensors, which are used to stabilize your body in the flexed-forward position. Depending on the variation of the bent-over row being performed, the abs and glutes may also be working hard to keep your torso rigid and hips locked throughout the reps.
