When renewing vehicle tax (car tax or vehicle excise duty), you must have the following:
- Your vehicle's V5C logbook (or the V11 reminder letter or email)
- Valid MOT certificate (if the vehicle requires an MOT)
- Valid vehicle insurance cover
- A payment method such as a debit or credit card
These documents are required whether renewing online, in person at a Post Office, or by phone. Having valid insurance is legally mandatory to renew the tax. The MOT certificate must also be current if applicable. If you use a direct debit, the renewal can happen automatically but you still need to have the necessary valid documents recorded with DVLA.
