There are six Nobel Prize categories that are awarded each year in practice. Five were created by Alfred Nobel’s will, and one was added later.
Original Nobel Prize fields
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Physiology or Medicine
- Literature
- Peace
These five areas are the ones Alfred Nobel specified when he established the prizes at the end of the 19th century.
Later-added Economics prize
In 1968, Sweden’s central bank created an additional award:
- The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (often called the Nobel Prize in Economics)
This economics prize is awarded together with the others and follows similar procedures, but it is formally a separate prize established in Nobel’s memory rather than by Nobel himself.
