Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian scholar and pilgrim from the Republic of Venice who joined the expedition of five ships to the Spice Islands led by Ferdinand Magellan. During the voyage, Pigafetta served as Magellans assistant and kept a journal accounting everything that seemed fascinating and foreign to him. His primary reason for writing the document was to discover and learn more about the world, and he desired to record details and account information about their journey or expedition.
