According to multiple sources, the percentage of adults in the United States who are obese is around 41.9% . This percentage has been increasing over time, with rates of obesity more than doubling in adults and children since the 1970s. The prevalence of obesity is higher among certain racial and ethnic groups, with non-Hispanic Black adults having the highest age-adjusted prevalence of obesity at 49.9%, followed by Hispanic adults at 45.6%, non-Hispanic White adults at 41.4%, and non-Hispanic Asian adults at 16.1% . The obesity prevalence was also found to be higher among women than men. The prevalence of severe obesity, defined as a BMI of 40 or higher, was found to be 9.2% in 2017-March 2020.
