According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US adult obesity rate was 41.9% in 2017-March 2020. This is the highest rate ever recorded, and the national adult obesity rate has increased by 26% since 2008. The percentage of adults aged 20 and over with overweight, including obesity, was 73.6% in 2017-2018. The prevalence of obesity is higher for Black and Hispanic women, Hispanic men, in the South and Midwest, in nonmetropolitan counties, and tends to increase with age. The racial and ethnic disparities in obesity rates are significant, with Black adults having the highest level of adult obesity nationally at 49.6%, followed by Hispanic adults at 44.8%, and non-Hispanic White adults at 42.2% .
