About 20% of orange cats are female, meaning roughly 1 in 5 orange cats is a girl.
Typical percentage
Most veterinary and pet-care sources estimate that about 80% of orange (ginger) cats are male and about 20% are female. Some sources phrase this as “around 80–81% male,” which still leaves roughly one-fifth of orange cats as females.
Why females are less common
The orange coat gene is on the X chromosome, so males (XY) only need one copy of the orange gene to be orange, while females (XX) need two copies, one from each parent. Because getting two orange X chromosomes is statistically less likely, fully orange females are less common even though they are not extremely rare.
