Several planets in our Solar System have rings. These include:
- Saturn : Known for its extensive and brilliant ring system, Saturn has the largest rings in the solar system
- Jupiter : Rings around Jupiter were discovered in 1979 by the Voyager 1 space probe and were further investigated in the 1990s by the Galileo orbiter
- Uranus : Uranus has 13 faint rings, most of which are opaque and only a few kilometers wide
- Neptune : Rings around Neptune were discovered in the 1980s
In addition to the gas giants, the asteroids Chariklo and Chiron also have rings
. Chariklo, a dwarf planet, is unique in that it has a system of 37 giant rings spanning 110 million miles, which is greater than the distance from Earth to the Sun
. While it was previously thought that ring systems were rare, it is now believed that they may be more common in our solar system than previously thought
