Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan dictator, was killed on October 20, 2011. There are conflicting reports about the exact circumstances of his death. According to a Misratan rebel fighter, when he asked Gaddafi about the damage done to Misrata by his forces, he denied any involvement and silently asked his captors not to kill him. One fighter demanded that Gaddafi stand up, and he struggled to do so. Gaddafi can be heard in one video saying "God forbids this" and "Do you know right from wrong?" when being shouted at by his captors. Gaddafi was wounded with a bayonet in his buttocks and then beaten by Misrata fighters. He was then loaded into an ambulance and transported to Misrata, where his body appeared lifeless. It remains unclear whether he died from this violence, the shrapnel wounds, or from being shot later, as some have claimed. According to doctors not present at his capture and ambulance staff, Gaddafi was shot in the head. The Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) initially claimed that Gaddafi died from injuries sustained in a firefight when loyalist forces attempted to free him, although a video of his last moments contradicts this claim.
