Eight House Republicans voted to oust Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker on October 3, 2023. They are:

  • Andy Biggs of Arizona
  • Ken Buck of Colorado
  • Tim Burchett of Tennessee
  • Eli Crane of Arizona
  • Matt Gaetz of Florida
  • Bob Good of Virginia
  • Nancy Mace of South Carolina
  • Thomas Massie of Kentucky

These Republicans joined House Democrats in removing McCarthy from his post as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, marking the first time a Speaker has ever been removed by vote. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) led the motion, citing McCarthys failure to pass bills with steep budget cuts and his broken promises made to the House GOP as reasons for the ousting. Like Gaetz, the other Republican lawmakers cited either the national debt or broken promises made to the House GOP for their reasons for voting to remove McCarthy.
