One of the famous "firsts" from Hierakonpolis is the Narmer Palette, which is one of the earliest known political documents depicting the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under King Narmer around 3100 BC. Additionally, Hierakonpolis is known for having the first preserved house in Egypt (a potter's house accidentally burnt down around 3600 BC), Egypt's earliest temple (circa 3400 BC), and the first industrial-scale breweries (circa 3600 BC) capable of producing around 300 gallons of beer per day. Moreover, it is notable for the first mummies dating to around 3600 BC, predating other mummies by at least 400 years. Hierakonpolis also features the oldest free- standing structure in the world, the ceremonial enclosure of King Khasekhemwy (circa 2700 BC).
