According to recent reports, nearly 900 school districts across 26 states in the United States currently use a four-day weekly academic schedule, up from 650 districts in 2020. The trend of a four-day week has been rising among American schools since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many finding benefits to having an extra day off. Most of these districts are in rural and western parts of the country, and the trend is favored by larger school districts over smaller, more rural districts. Some of the states that have seen the most recent transitions to four-day weeks include Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. In Missouri, for example, roughly 25% of schools moved to the new schedule ahead of the 2022 academic year. However, only a few large districts have adopted a four-day week.
