Starbucks is closing approximately 1% of its company-operated stores across the U.S. and Canada in fiscal year 2025, which translates to about 500 store closures, primarily targeting underperforming locations or those where renovations are not financially viable. The company currently has around 18,734 stores in North America and expects to end the year with about 18,300 locations after these closures. The closures coincide with a $1 billion restructuring plan, including reductions of around 900 non-retail corporate jobs.

Starbucks has not provided a complete public list of all closing stores, but some known locations from community discussions include:

  • California: Hemet, San Diego (Main and Magnolia), North Ridge, San Francisco (Fisherman's Wharf)
  • Colorado: Fort Collins (College & Horsetooth, College & Laurel)
  • Georgia: Atlanta (Piedmont & Auburn)
  • Minnesota: Minneapolis (Canadian Pacific, 22nd and Hennepin, 26th and Nicollet, City Center)
  • Texas: Houston (Memorial & Asbury).

The closures focus on stores that are unable to meet customer expectations for atmosphere or lack a path to financial viability. Affected employees may have options to transfer or receive severance packages. The closures are part of CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" plan aiming to restore store ambiance and improve customer experience, following a period of declining sales and increased competition.

In addition, some closures are occurring in the UK and other EMEA regions as part of portfolio adjustments, although Starbucks plans to continue opening new stores in certain markets.
