Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bounded by Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C., to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean to its east. Maryland has a total land area of 12,407 square miles (32,130 km2) and is the eighth-smallest state by land area. Its population of 6,177,224 ranks it the 18th-most populous state and the fifth-most densely populated. The state is made up of twenty-three counties plus Baltimore City, which is considered to be on par with a county. The majority of Marylands population is concentrated in the cities and suburbs surrounding Washington, D.C., as well as in and around Marylands most populous city, Baltimore. Marylands history as a border state has led it to exhibit characteristics of both the Northern and the Southern regions of the United States.
