Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius, 273.15 Kelvin) under normal conditions. However, this is not always the case. Scientists have found liquid water as cold as -40 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 degrees Celsius) in clouds and even cooled water down to -42 degrees Fahrenheit (-41.1 degrees Celsius) in the lab. When liquid water is cooled below -42 degrees Fahrenheit, it crystallizes into ice too quickly for scientists to measure the temperature of the liquid. The freezing point of seawater is lower than that of freshwater because of the salt in it. Seawater freezes at about 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 degrees Celsius) .
