Despite popular belief, no tequila has a worm in it. The worm is actually found in a product called mezcal, which is often confused for tequila. Mezcal is a Mexican spirit that is similar to tequila, but it is made from a blend of one of 250 types of the cactus-like succulents, while tequila must be at least 51 percent blue agave (agave tequilana) . The worm itself is actually the larvae of a moth, called a gusano de maguey, named for the maguey plant it feeds off of and which tequila and mezcal are both made from. The worm is often placed inside bottles of mezcal as a marketing strategy to enhance the flavor and color of the drink.
