A scallop is a type of marine bivalve mollusk that belongs to the taxonomic family Pectinidae. The term "scallop" is also sometimes used to refer to species in other closely related families within the same order, such as the family Propeamussiidae. Scallops are often used in cooking and can be served as appetizers or used as an ingredient in various dishes and appetizers. The adductor muscle meat of the giant scallop is a popular ingredient, and dried scallops, also known as conpoy, are used in Chinese cuisine. The scallop shell is the traditional emblem of St. James the Great and is popular with pilgrims travelling the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) .
