After a root canal, it is important to take special care of the affected tooth for a few weeks or until your tooth is fully restored by your endodontist or dentist recommends otherwise. Here are some tips for post-treatment care:
-
Pain management: You may experience some discomfort following a root canal treatment, especially during the first few days after the procedure. Your dentist may prescribe an appropriate pain reliever to help manage any postoperative discomfort you may experience. You can also rinse with lukewarm salt water to reduce pain and swelling.
-
Eating: Eat mainly soft foods in the days after your procedure to avoid additional mouth or jaw pain. Avoid hard or crunchy foods such as nuts or chips as they can cause damage or further irritation near the affected area of your mouth. Chew on the side of your mouth opposite to where you had your root canal to avoid damaging the treated tooth.
-
Oral hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth as you regularly would, but make sure to be gentle around the treated area. Do not pull the floss around the treated tooth as you can dislodge the temporary filling. Increase your use of mouthwash as well.
-
Avoid certain activities: Avoid chewing on hard foods or using the treated tooth for biting down heavily until youve been cleared by your endodontist or dentist. Additionally, smoking can interfere with the healing process and should be avoided.
-
Follow-up appointments: Once your root canal and any follow-up appointments are completed, you’ll need to return to your dentist for a final crown to fully restore the tooth. It’s important to make this appointment as soon as your endodontist completes work on your tooth.
Remember to take care of your teeth by brushing, flossing, regular checkups, and cleanings, and be sure to return to your dentist and/or endodontist if you experience pain or swelling in the future.
