Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. There is no cure for shingles, but early treatment with prescription antiviral drugs may speed healing and lower the risk of complications. Here are some things you can do for shingles:

  • Antiviral medication: Acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir are commonly prescribed antiviral medications that can reduce the severity and duration of shingles symptoms. These medicines work best when taken within the first 3 days after the rash appears.

  • Pain relief: Shingles can cause severe pain, so your healthcare provider may prescribe pain relief medication such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or a medication that reduces inflammation, such as a corticosteroid. Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, in the form of a cream, gel, spray, or skin patch, may also help relieve pain.

  • Self-care: To help manage the condition, keep the rash dry and clean. After a bath or shower, dry the rash gently. Try not to scratch the rash, as this can cause an infection or scarring. Wearing loose-fitting clothes and using a cooled towel on the affected area may reduce discomfort. If possible, cover the rash to avoid spreading the virus to other people. Use a non-stick dressing if the area isnt covered by light clothing. Avoid antibiotic creams, gels, and sticking plasters (Band-Aids) on the blisters, as these may slow down the healing process.

Its important to see a healthcare provider as soon as possible if you suspect you have shingles. They can diagnose the condition and prescribe appropriate treatment.
