Sinus pressure occurs when the membranes that line your nasal passages become irritated or inflamed, and mucus may also build up and stop draining, leading to pain and pressure. Here are some ways to relieve sinus pressure:
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water and juice, to help thin your mucus. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, which can cause dehydration.
-
Use a nasal saline spray: It’s salt water, and it will help keep your nasal passages from drying out. You can also try a neti pot, nasal irrigator, or bulb syringe.
-
Apply a warm compress: Placing a warm, damp towel over your nose, cheeks, or forehead can help relieve discomfort and open your nasal passages.
-
Take a steamy shower: Breathing in steam from a pot of warm (but not too hot) water or taking a long shower can help moisten your nasal passages and relieve sinus pressure.
-
Try over-the-counter medications: Nasal decongestants, antihistamines, and pain relievers can help relieve sinus pressure. However, use nasal decongestants for only a few days because they may cause worse stuffiness, known as rebound congestion.
-
Rest and stay healthy: Rest helps the body fight infection and speed recovery. Avoid irritants such as cigarette smoke, and keep your sinuses moist by using a humidifier or vaporizer.
If your sinus symptoms are not getting better with at-home treatments, and if your sinus symptoms last longer than seven to 10 days, you should see a doctor for treatment.
