Swollen gums can be caused by various factors such as gingivitis, periodontitis, pregnancy, infection, brushing and flossing too hard, and more. Here are some home remedies that can help relieve swollen gums:

  • Brush and floss regularly: Good oral hygiene is a strong defense against swollen gums. Brush at least twice a day and floss regularly.
  • Rinse with saltwater: A saltwater rinse can soothe gum inflammation and promote healing. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt and 8 ounces of lukewarm water, rinse your mouth with the solution for 30 seconds, and spit it out. Do this 2 to 3 times a day until the swelling goes away.
  • Apply a warm or cold compress: Warm and cold compresses can relieve pain and swelling in swollen gums. After soaking a clean washcloth or towel in warm water, squeeze out the excess water and hold the warm cloth against your face for about 5 minutes. Then, wrap a bag of crushed ice in a clean washcloth or towel and hold it against your face for about 5 minutes. You can alternate the use of both compresses until the pain and swelling go down.
  • Improve your nutrition: Eating a well-balanced diet can contribute to better gum health. Be sure to include plenty of Vitamin C and calcium, which can minimize the likelihood of experiencing swollen gums.

If home remedies are ineffective, it is recommended to see a dentist for a full diagnosis and treatment.
