If you lost your Social Security card, the first step is to consider whether you really need to get a replacement card. Knowing your Social Security number is what’s important, and you’ll rarely need the card itself, perhaps only when you get a new job and have to show it to your employer. However, if you do need a replacement card, there are several ways to apply for one:
-
Online: The easiest way to request a replacement Social Security card is online with a personal my Social Security account. You can go to www.ssa.gov/ssnumber and answer a few questions to find out the best way to apply. If you aren’t able to use a personal my Social Security account to request a replacement card, you can still begin the process online and complete it in a local Social Security office or card center, usually in less time.
-
In-person: You can visit a local Social Security office and fill out the Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and bring it to your local office along with unexpired identification.
If you cannot complete the application online, you will need to provide the required documents in person. We need to see different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. If you do not begin the application online, you will need to complete an Application for a Social Security Card at your local Social Security office.
