When your water breaks, it means that the amniotic sac that holds your baby has ruptured, and amniotic fluid is leaking out of your vagina. Here are some steps to take if your water breaks:

  1. Put on a clean pair of underwear or a sanitary pad to catch the fluid.
  2. Lie down and try to relax for 15 to 30 minutes. When you stand up, see if fluid comes out. If the fluid is your water breaking, it should come out when you stand.
  3. Note the color, amount, and smell of the fluid. Amniotic fluid is clear or pale yellow and odorless.
  4. Contact your healthcare provider right away to get advice on when to head to the hospital or birthing center.
  5. Avoid having a bath or using tampons after your water breaks.
  6. Follow any instructions given by your healthcare provider.
  7. Make sure your hospital bag is packed ahead of time with all the essentials you’ll need.

Its important to note that if your water breaks before labor starts, it's called prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM), and you should contact your healthcare provider right away.
