There have been several tragedies that occurred at the Biltmore Estate, including:
-
George Vanderbilts death: George Vanderbilt, the original owner of the estate, died following an emergency appendectomy in Washington, D.C. in March 1914.
-
Pool drowning: It is rumored that a child, reportedly a family friend of the Vanderbilt family, drowned in the pool during one of the lavish parties held in the estate.
-
Young men shot dead: In 1922, a group of young men trespassed on the estate and were confronted by Walter Brooks, a security guard. One of the young men, Price, was seriously wounded during the shooting, and two others, West and Lance, were killed.
-
Falling tree: In 2022 and 2023, two separate incidents occurred where trees fell and resulted in the death of employees at the estate.
-
Haunted tales: Visitors touring the rooms of Biltmore House have reported feeling constantly watched or followed, and there are tales of a headless orange cat wandering the house from time to time.
It is worth noting that there is not much evidence of many tragic events that occurred within the walls of Biltmore.
