The trend observed in youth suicide rates over the past decade is a significant increase. Suicide deaths among young people, especially those aged 10 to 24, have risen sharply. For example, in the United States, suicide deaths in this age group increased by 62% from 2007 to 2021. Research also shows that suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts have increased among high school students since 2011. The rise is noted across different demographic groups, with particularly fast growth among Black youth and some other racial groups. Although there has been a slight decline in suicidal thoughts among teens recently, the overall trend over the past decade remains an increase in youth suicide rates. Factors such as mental health struggles, isolation, violence concerns, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to this trend.
