Valvano was diagnosed in June 1992 with this glandular cancer that had spread to his bones, spine, back, neck, legs, and hips. Reports noted it as of unknown primary origin, though some doctors suspected the lungs.
Progression and Death
The cancer caused severe pain in areas like his lower back, hips, and knees, leading to chemotherapy every few weeks. He battled it for nearly a year before passing on April 28, 1993, at age 47.
