The type of death penalty used in Utah primarily is lethal injection. However, the firing squad is also a legal and alternative method of execution in Utah. The firing squad is used if the inmate sentenced before 2004 chose it, or if the state cannot obtain the necessary lethal injection drugs within 30 days of a scheduled execution. Utah is one of the few states to have used the firing squad legally. Executions take place at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City.
