McDonald's originally specialized in barbecue when it first opened in 1940. The first restaurant, opened by the McDonald brothers in San Bernardino, California, was a barbecue restaurant featuring a large menu with car hop service and its most famous offering was hot dogs. It was not primarily a burger restaurant at that time. Later, in 1948, the brothers revamped the concept to focus on hamburgers and reduced the menu to a few items, pioneering what became the fast-food model.
