Uluru is a large inselberg (often described as a monolithic rock outcrop) formed from sandstone. It rises abruptly from the surrounding flat sands and plains in central Australia, and its geology is characterized by Arkose (Mutitjulu Arkose) with a reddish weathered exterior. In short, Uluru is an inselberg—a prominent isolated landform created by weathering and erosion leaving a resistant block standing above a lower surrounding plain.
