Gran Turismo is a series of racing simulation video games developed by Polyphony Digital. The games are intended to emulate the appearance and performance of a large selection of vehicles, most of which are licensed reproductions of real-world automobiles. The franchises debut was in 1997, and since then, over 90 million units have been sold worldwide, making it the highest selling video game franchise under the PlayStation brand.
In addition to the video games, there is also an international virtual-to-reality competition called Nissan® PlayStation® GT Academy, which offers the best Gran Turismo players in the world the chance to compete against each other for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a real-life professional racecar driver.
While Gran Turismo is a racing simulation video game, it does not refer to a specific type of racing. However, the game does feature a variety of racing styles, including circuit racing, rally racing, and endurance racing.
