Adipose tissue is a specialized type of connective tissue. Its main cells are adipocytes, which store energy in the form of lipids. There are two primary types of adipose tissue based on adipocyte morphology and function: white adipose tissue, which mainly stores energy and is predominant in adults, and brown adipose tissue, which is primarily involved in heat generation and is mainly found in newborns. The tissue also has important roles in cushioning organs, thermal insulation, and hormone production. It has a fine extracellular matrix mostly composed of reticular fibers and contains other supporting cells such as fibroblasts, capillary endothelial cells, and macrophages.
