Four U.S. presidents have been assassinated:
- Abraham Lincoln (1865) was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
- James A. Garfield (1881) was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, and died on September 19, 1881, due to complications from the wound and a lack of understanding of antiseptic medicine
- William McKinley (1897-1901) was assassinated on September 6, 1901, by Leon Czolgosz at the Temple of Music on the grounds of the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. McKinley died on September 14, 1901, from gangrene caused by the bullet
- John F. Kennedy (1961-63) was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963, while in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. He died the same day from a gunshot wound to the head
These assassinations have left a lasting impact on American history and have led to increased security measures for U.S. presidents and their families.
