Mandatory vaccines for school attendance in California (Transitional Kindergarten through 12th grade) include:
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap)
- Polio (OPV or IPV)
- Hepatitis B
- Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
- Varicella (Chickenpox)
For students entering 7th grade and above, at least one dose of a pertussis- containing vaccine (Tdap) given on or after the 7th birthday is required. Also, students entering 7th grade must have two doses of Varicella vaccine. Students in public and private schools must comply with these immunization requirements, while homeschooled students do not have to meet these requirements. The COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required for school attendance unless fully approved by the FDA and adopted by state regulation in the future. These vaccines are required unless the student qualifies for a valid exemption, such as a medical exemption.
